DAVID’S FUNDRAISING REPORTS
TOTAL RAISED OVER FIVE TREKS = £18,713
2001 (Patagonia, Chile) £3,712
The total amount raised for this challenge was £3,712, and though I no longer have detailed records of the activities involved in fundraising for this trip (it was, after all, 6 years ago as I write this!) it consisted of a mixture of tin-rattling, personal sponsorship, fundraising through raffles, car boot sales, quizzes, and the like, plus some local company support. My employer at the time, Bradford & Bingley, also generously contributed £500.
At the time of course the concept of recording everything online, or donating online through sites such as justgiving.com, were not used to the same extent as they are now.
However after the event I was presented with this certificate showing the total amount raised. This did not include a £299 registration fee/donation which I had to pay as this was my first trekking challenge for Mencap. This total was after paying for insurance, visa, and airport taxes.
2003 (Maputo, Mozambique) £3,012
After raising sponsorship for Mencap for the expedition in Chile I then committed to raise at least £2,500 for another trip, this time to Mozambique. Project Renew Mozambique was special because two groups of people benefited…
(1) Most of the funds raised again went to Mencap. Based in the UK, this charity support people with learning disabilities, their families, and their carers. Learn more through the on the right of this page.
(2) Whilst in Mozambique, and prior to the trekking expedition, we worked to renovate a special school in the capital city Maputo, where the infrastructure still suffer the after-effects of the civil war.
This time, I have more details of the fundraising activities …

Once again, fundraising was a wide variety of activities, though this time I was also supported by several Rugby businesses – Jamesway Travel, The Rugby Town Centre Company, and Franklin Associates, who all made significant donations.
A major contribution to the fundraising came from a traditional collection at the door of Sainsbury’s in Rugby, which raised over £750. Sometimes it just seems to pay to ask people directly for a contribution!
Car boot sales, quizzes, cake and plant sales, and tombolas all added to the kitty.
The justgiving.com page for this trip can be seen by clicking >>here<<. Note that the figure on the certificate in the image here is £7 short of the total raised as a last claim of tax relief was processed after the production of the certificates.
